These Are the Winners of the German Packaging Award 2026

More than 210 companies from 17 countries entered their innovations across the 10 categories of the German Packaging Award 2026. In the end, 37 companies from five countries were able to celebrate an award. We present the winning solutions to you and summarise the most important trends in the competition categories. We also take a special look at the Young Talent category, which is supported by FACHPACK as a sponsor.

The German Packaging Award 2026 recognises 37 companies for innovations ranging from sustainable materials and digital solutions to packaging machinery and young talent projects.

As the largest showcase for everything to do with packaging in Europe, the German Packaging Award attracts innovations from all over the world every year. As a premium partner of the dvi, FACHPACK plays its part in making this competition possible. This year, too, the independent, 22-strong panel of expert judges had plenty of work to do over their two-day jury session. In the end, solutions from 37 companies in Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK were awarded a prize. The winners are spread across all ten categories, including machinery, automation and software as well as the up-and-coming talent segment. From plastic and fibre-based packaging materials through to glass and metal, every packaging material is represented.

 

Young Talents: Cause for Hope and a Big Impression 

In the Young Talent category, which is supported by FACHPACK, the jury honoured four innovative solutions. They show packaging as a multifunctional medium that goes beyond product protection, bring an – in the best sense – simple, AI-supported sustainability assessment, offer emotional support in special situations, and provide added value through playful elements.

Net’s Play!

The packaging for table-tennis bats and balls with an integrated net comes from Pina Schmitz, Lara Thole, Sophia Reinecke and Wiebke Wendorff, who study at Fachhochschule Münster – Münster School of Design.

What impresses the jury: "With just a few movements, the packaging turns into a table-tennis net. The original packaging thus offers real added value and a convincing secondary or additional use. In this way, Net's Play makes spontaneous exercise and playing together easy – for everyone, anytime and anywhere."

What the students say: "The idea for Net's Play came about during our research into products with packaging that could be improved. In the process, we discovered table-tennis bat packaging that uses a lot of material, especially plastic, and where the net has to be bought separately. Through working on Net's Play, we discovered our enthusiasm for paper and cardboard. It's amazing how versatile and at the same time robust this material is. We're particularly interested in packaging and products that create positive added value beyond their actual function."

 

EASE 

EASE is a functional pregnancy test that provides emotional support to the user from purchase through to use, thanks to a clear packaging design and visual design. It comes from Fine Kleipa, Siri Brockfeld, Lisa Bahlinger, Lilly Blume and Moritz Hegemann, who also study at Fachhochschule Münster – Münster School of Design.
What impresses the jury: "EASE completely rethinks the experience of taking a pregnancy test by turning the packaging into an intuitive companion. Through its properties and instructions, the discreet packaging conveys emotional reassurance. The cardboard packaging guides users through every step, serves as a holder while the test result is developing, and subsequently allows for inconspicuous storage. By integrating several functions into a single design, EASE reduces resource consumption while at the same time offering users guidance, comfort and reassurance in one of the most sensitive moments of life."

What the students say: "The idea for EASE came to us in a rather unexpected place: in front of the pregnancy-test shelf at the chemist's. In talking it over, we quickly realised that the existing selection completely overlooks consumers' emotional needs, whether that's in the purchasing situation or in the impractical handling. The packaging for EASE is made deliberately and exclusively from paper and cardboard, with no foreign materials whatsoever, thereby living up to our commitment to sustainability. From the very beginning, our aim was to understand the packaging not as a mere casing for a pregnancy test, but as an intuitive companion."

 

OpenUp!

The transformable and reusable six-pack for drinks was developed and submitted by Lena Peitzmeier, Michèle Brandt, Hanna Otte, Ines Dahlmann and Nicola Matuschak from Fachhochschule Münster – Münster School of Design.

What impresses the jury: "OpenUp! transforms classic drinks packaging into an interactive, social experience made of robust, reusable cardboard. The striking, triangular design combines two different additional functions to promote analogue interaction: a bottle-cap throwing game and a passive loudspeaker. A clear colour system and intuitive illustrations directly on the packaging make it playfully easy and straightforward to use. OpenUp reduces digital distraction from mobile phones and shows how packaging can equally promote genuine encounters and sustainability through a clever second-use concept."

What the students say: "During the development of our project, we asked ourselves how packaging can offer people not just a product, but also a shared experience.

In the process, we noticed that many get-togethers today are dominated by mobile phones. That was a problem that we could all identify with, and so could many people around us, and one we were keen to solve. From this came the idea of developing packaging that creates an occasion to play together, to talk and simply to spend time together. It was particularly important to us that people interact with one another consciously – and entirely without media. What excites us most are packaging solutions that are conceived creatively and don't simply end up in the bin once they've served their actual purpose."

 

EcoTrace

EcoTrace is software that provides an AI-supported CO₂ assessment based on a photo of the food packaging. The developer is Lennart Standtke, who is doing his Master of Science in Food Chain Environment at Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences.

What impresses the jury: "EcoTrace revolutionises the ecological assessment of food packaging: from just a few photos, a transparent CO₂ eco-balance is produced in seconds. The award-winning innovation combines artificial intelligence, scientifically validated life-cycle analysis and high practical usability into an affordable solution for small and medium-sized enterprises. In doing so, EcoTrace creates the basis for more sustainable packaging decisions and supports companies in meeting the rising requirements of the European Packaging Regulation."

What the student says: "The packaging already carries all the information needed for a CO₂ assessment – the list of ingredients, quantity details, packaging material. During my master's studies, I had the idea of simply reading out this existing 'data sheet' by photo, rather than recording it manually, and then automatically producing an eco-balance from it – the kind that small and medium-sized food producers can otherwise scarcely afford. As the next step, the automatic classification of packaging materials, including recycled-content variants and recyclability, is to be developed further. Alongside this, we want to improve the data basis with a full ecoinvent connection. I'm particularly interested in how strongly packaging decisions – choice of material, recycled-content proportion, composite materials – concretely affect a product's CO₂ footprint, and how little this has so far been made visible to manufacturers."

Wash-off adhesive enables premium labels that adhere securely during use and peel off almost residue-free during the washing process; the adhesive remains bonded to the paper fibres and does not leach into the washing water. 

Sustainability Dominates

Judging by the number of entries, the sustainability category has been the competition’s dominant category for several years now. In order to better reflect and assess the steadily rising innovation performance in this area, the German Packaging Award divides the category into the segments of recycled-content use, recyclability, reusability, material reduction and overall concept. Regardless of the entries submitted specifically in the sustainability category, the topic is omnipresent in the other categories too. There is basically hardly a single innovation left that does not also bring progress in this area – be it circularity, the use of recycled content, resource conservation or other aspects.

One fundamental trend among the eight winners in the sustainability category is the simplification of complex structures – whether by integrating the barrier into the printing ink, using laser marking to eliminate the printing process, consistently reducing material by minimising foreign components, or consistently reducing the number of different packaging materials down to a pure mono-material, which in the best case is even made of PCR. Another striking feature is the focus on optimal recyclability, which goes beyond the pure material composition and targets processes such as deinking or the removal of labels.

Design Connects Optics and Sutainability

The four award-winning solutions in the design category combine aesthetics and brand identity with recyclability and material reduction. They offer concrete functional benefits for users, for example in terms of ergonomics or recognisability. It is also striking that the companies successfully and creatively combine ecological responsibility with functional innovations – among other things in the areas of residual emptying and refilling, by doing away with outer or transport packaging, or by increasing economic efficiency.

Digitalisation is Advancing

The three digitalisation winners demonstrate that data-driven and AI-supported processes are taking on an ever more important role in the packaging field, too. Software turns sustainability into an operational management tool through which packaging data can be digitalised and the CO₂ footprint, recyclability and regulatory compliance can be displayed in real time. Data Matrix codes permanently embedded in the glass give reusable bottles a digital identity and enable traceability and transparency in the reusable system without any system conversion. In the e-commerce sphere, software helps to optimise empty space and material use on a heuristic basis.

Functionality & Convenience Offer Real Added Value

The four winners in the Functionality & Convenience category turn what is essentially passive packaging into an active tool or an active part of the process. The new functionalities show up in life-saving applications in the operating theatre, in ceiling mounting in living spaces, and in dosing and application. At the same time, the solutions manage to do without separate components that were previously required and noticeably reduce both material use and complexity.

 

Logistics & Material Flow Combine Ecology and Cost-Effectiveness

The common trend among the four winning logistics solutions is the combination of the circular economy with process optimisation. PCR recycled material in stretch film offers options for meeting PPWR obligations, cardboard replaces wood in heavy-duty applications, and intelligent reusable containers replace single-use ones while simultaneously creating transparency through digital tracking. In addition to their ecological benefit, all the solutions also deliver measurable economic advantages.

 

New Material Saves Resources

The award-winning solution in the New Material category shows how the extremely economical use of a material innovation can replace an entire packaging component. Instead of shrink film, foamed adhesive dots hold beverage multipacks together. The approach is systemically effective and simultaneously reduces material, energy and waste.

Packaging Machinery Boosts Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness

Maximum flexibility, minimal downtime, reduced space requirements, short time-to-market and increased process transparency are among the outstanding optimisations achieved by the three winners in the packaging machinery category. Awards went, for example, to new possibilities in inline format adjustment and quick changeovers with a significantly reduced need for manual intervention, in modularity, in yield monitoring to minimise losses, in hygienic design, and in format-independent transport systems.

Product Presentation Unites Beauty and New Benefits

The four award-winning solutions in the Product Presentation category present themselves as eye-catchers with impact from a distance, combine transport packaging and display as shelf-ready packaging, offer a strong gift and brand experience thanks to a premium look and numerous technically sophisticated finishing elements, or – through the use of a patented embossing technique – apply Braille, relief lettering and logos directly onto flexible packaging with millimeter precision.

Cost-Effectiveness: Two Winners – One Idea

In the Cost-Effectiveness category, an award went to a shelf-ready pack that combines product protection, easy removal and safe stackability with significantly higher process efficiency. What is remarkable here is that this is achieved entirely without new investment in automation. Also exciting: the technically identical innovation was developed and submitted by two companies independently of one another. So there are two winners for one award-winning innovation.

Invitation to the Award Ceremony

The German Packaging Awards will be presented on 19 November in Berlin. Attendance is free of charge and merely requires prior registration via the homepage of the German Packaging Award at www.packagingaward.de. The Gold Awards will then also be presented at the award ceremony. With the Gold Awards, the jury honors innovations that stand out even from among the ranks of the packaging award winners.
