As Thin as Possible, as Safe as Necessary: Packaging in transition

FACHPACK 2025 is a must-attend event for the packaging industry: the exhibitors at FACHPACK cover the entire packaging value chain in eleven exhibition halls. The focus is on packaging materials and packaging aids as well as innovative technological solutions.

Mondi is both an exhibitor at FACHPACK as well as part of FuturePack and is presenting a best-practice case in the INNOVATIONBOX.

The green transformation of the packaging world will also be the dominant theme at the SÜDPACK stand at FACHPACK 2025. The film manufacturer will also be focusing on its current product developments for the food industry: from super-thin skin films and the latest recyclable pouch, to thermoforming and tray packaging concepts.

Sustainability is an elementary component of SÜDPACK’s Strategy 2030. Through its commitment to mechanical and chemical recycling, the company actively promotes the circular economy in the plastics and packaging industry.

Lightweight Pouch Packaging

SÜDPACK is presenting its new CarbonLite product family for the first time in Nuremberg. The recyclable mono-materials are suitable for a wide range of packaging concepts – for example as PE flow-packs for cheese pieces or herb baguettes, as practical PP doy-packs for snacks, as PP or PE block bottom bags for coffee or as PP spouted pouches for fruit purees. They can even be processed at high cycle rates on existing machines. The sealing performance (including the integration of zippers, spouts, and valves made from the same mono-material) and the adaptable barrier properties ensure a high level of product protection and a long shelf life. Above all, however, they score points for their lower CO2 impact compared to conventional composite materials or heavier tray packaging, explains the company.

SÜDPACK is presenting several material-efficient and recyclable options for the safe, efficient packaging of sausage, cheese, or meat. These range from thermo-formable rigid and flexible films to peelable and multi-peelable top films from the PP and PE PureLine and the Peel PET floatable, an innovative top film that can be separated from an APET bottom film or tray during the recycling process thanks to its floating properties. All material structures are characterized by excellent sealing properties, even with seal seam contamination, as well as outstanding barrier properties.

All FACHPACK exhibitors will be focusing on the circular economy and resource conservation. After all, recycling is not only expected by consumers, it is a requirement. This is the result of the new study “The Sustainability Influence” by Amcor (merged with Berry Global in May). The study analyses how European consumers’ perception of more sustainable packaging has developed in 2025. 84 percent of shoppers would like to see clear recycling instructions on packaging.

According to Coveris, its actions are consistently focused on recycling and material recovery. At FACHPACK, the packaging company will, therefore, be presenting innovative solutions made from recycled and recyclable materials with the clear aim of closing the packaging loop. Key highlights include SleeveFlexR Stretch, an advanced and sustainable sleeve solution with a recycled content of up to 75 percent. It is a cost-effective alternative to shrink sleeve labels and is made from high-quality recyclates that come from the company’s own ReCover DeInking recycling plant, enabling a closed-loop recycling system.

“All the packaging solutions we are presenting at FACHPACK are in line with our ‘No Waste’ vision and show the progress we have already made towards greater sustainability,” says Christian Kolarik, CEO of Coveris.

Click in the Sealing Lid

For many years, Greiner Packaging has been offering sealing lids that make it possible to dispense with a third component, the sealing plate. This reduction in material from three to two components means that cups and lids can be made from the same material, such as PP or PET. This saves resources, simplifies the packaging process, and improves recyclability. Greiner Packaging is now going one step further with the Click-In sealing lid. Compared to traditional sealing lids, the Click In lid only requires a small, inwardly molded embossing on the cup to ensure a stable fit. As soon as the lid is put on, it stays securely in place and reliably protects the product – even if the cup accidentally tips over. Particularly practical: when the cup is closed again, the user hears a clear “click”, which guarantees that the lid is firmly in place and the cup will not leak.

Metsä Board will be presenting its high-quality lightweight cardboard packaging at FACHPACK 2025. Visitors to the stand will be able to learn about Metsä Board’s ongoing €60 million investment at the Simpele mill, where a new state-of-the-art coating line is scheduled to start up in October 2025.

Case studies in the bag

At FACHPACK, Metsä Board’s experts will discuss how the choice of different materials can influence packaging performance and carbon footprint, and they will present verified case studies from different end-use sectors to illustrate how data-driven decisions can support wider packaging goals. “FACHPACK is one of the most important European events to connect with packaging experts and explore the latest technologies and trends,” says Marjo Halonen, VP Communications at Metsä Board.

Mondi will also be showcasing its diverse packaging range, from high-barrier solutions for pet food, food and home, and personal care products to fiber-based alternatives for everyday goods, as well as solid and corrugated board solutions for e-commerce and industrial applications.

Another highlight at Mondi’s stand is Mondi MatchMaker, a collaboration initiative for start-ups. It connects early-stage innovators with Mondi’s business units through a structured model that supports pilot development and scalable growth. Mondi MatchMaker will be part of the panel discussion at FuturePack 2025, where founders can engage in dialogue with players in the packaging industry.

The Mayr Melnhof Group will be showcasing its new TaperPack product. With its distinctive conical shape, the TaperPack offers a clever design solution that significantly improves logistics efficiency while enhancing product presentation.

“What sets the TaperPack apart from conventional molded cartons is its nestability. This simple and extremely effective feature leads to a dramatic optimization in transport and storage: while standard molded boxes only allow 105 units per pallet, the TaperPack offers space for up to 1,050 units, which corresponds to a tenfold increase,” the company says. The result is a significant reduction in transport costs and a noticeable saving in storage space, which offers real added value along the entire supply chain. TaperPack can be upgraded with the full range of MM finishing options: from premium printing and embossing to hot foil stamping.

Completely new packaging concepts and alternative materials can also be seen on numerous stands at FACHPACK. The KOLB Group, specialists in corrugated cardboard packaging, is one of the exhibitors that will also be honored as a current winner of the German Packaging Award. The company was awarded for a Mixpack pendulum packaging (from Festool) with an integrated register for saw blades.
