Why barrier values are deceptive.
Barrier values such as OTR and WVTR are often considered key indicators of the performance of packaging materials. However, in practice, these values only provide limited information about the actual protective effect—especially when mechanical stresses such as creases come into play.
In my presentation, I will show why barrier layers can fail despite good laboratory values if they are creased during the packaging process or in everyday use. I will explain how creases affect barrier performance, which material systems are particularly sensitive, and how crease resistance can be specifically improved – whether through material selection, layer design, or process optimization.
