The Fibre-Based Window as an Alternative to Plastic

Consumers want to see what they are buying – and the classic plastic film window has met this expectation for decades. Now, delfort presents a fibre-based innovation that offers the same clear view of the product.

With thinwrap transparent, delfort is introducing a packaging solution that can replace plastic applications in both the food and non-food sectors – without compromising on protection, transparency, or haptics. In this interview, Markus Rothböck, Head of the Packaging Division at delfort, explains how the paper can be used on existing machinery and what advantages it offers in terms of recyclability.

“Sustainable packaging is no longer a niche topic,” says Markus Rothböck, Head of Packaging at delfort.

What advantages does the solution offer users in terms of recyclability?
With thinwrap transparent, companies have access to a packaging material that offers similar functionality and transparency to plastic – while remaining part of the established paper recycling stream. This is a positive aspect that can also be leveraged in communication with end consumers.

Our paper is recyclable according to the CEPI method. This process ensures a high fibre yield and minimal residues in standard paper recycling streams. thinwrap transparent is compatible with the existing paper recycling infrastructure – unlike many laminated packaging materials that contain PE layers. No separation step is required; the material can be collected and processed together with other paper grades. In doing so, our paper supports the circular economy and compliance with upcoming EU packaging regulations and sustainability goals.

How does thinwrap perform compared to other window materials in terms of transparency, feel, and barrier properties?
thinwrap transparent is available in different levels of transparency. The paper with the highest level allows more than 80 percent of incident light to pass through, making it almost completely see-through. The shape and colour of the packaged product are visible from the outside. Relevant for retailers: barcodes can be scanned through the transparent paper.

The feel is luxurious. The paper has a glossy surface and a pleasant grip. It is lightweight yet highly tear- and tensile-resistant, with a fully coated, A-A heat-sealable surface. Another advantage: thinwrap transparent can be printed in high quality using standard printing processes such as flexographic and gravure printing.

High moisture resistance is also an important feature: thinwrap transparent can be used, for example, as protective wrapping for textiles in the humid environment of a laundry. And since it is certified for direct food contact, it is also suitable for typical on-the-go products such as sandwiches and wraps.

How easily can the material be integrated into existing packaging machines – are adjustments necessary or can it be used directly?
Our papers are designed to run easily on existing equipment, usually without any mechanical modifications. In addition, thinwrap transparent offers good folding properties, can be sealed effectively even through multiple layers, and its strength prevents packages from bursting.

In which application areas do you currently see the greatest market potential – more in food or non-food segments?
The examples mentioned – takeaway food and textiles – show that delfort operates successfully in both areas. Our product range is suitable for numerous applications across both segments, whether for toys and cosmetics or vegetables and bakery products. We see significant potential in both the food and non-food sectors, as customers in both areas are looking for sustainable solutions.

What can we expect next – is delfort already working on additional transparent or functional paper solutions?
As a leading company, we continuously drive the transition towards sustainable and competitive solutions, led by our research and development team. In addition to transparent packaging papers, delfort already offers highly functional papers with key barrier properties, excellent printability, and an outstanding environmental profile.

Thank you very much for the interview, Mr Rothböck.
