Session description
The requirements for fiber-based food packaging are increasing—especially with regard to barrier properties.
At the same time, polymer-coated fiber materials are reaching both physical and technological limits.
Using examples, the presentation highlights the gap between the actual performance limits of coated fiber materials and the requirements of various product groups, especially in the food sector, which requires high barriers.
The focus is on the question: What is technologically possible today – and how far is that from real demand? An outlook on regulatory frameworks (e.g., CEPI 2025), as well as implications for recyclability and microplastics issues, round off the presentation and a possible discussion.
