Physical laws of diffusion initiate the migration of chemicals from food packaging. These diffusion models take into account that large molecules migrate more slowly than smaller ones do. Furthermore, the migration speed might also depend on the type of plastic. In addition, a model considers as well parameters, such as the filling and storage temperature, the storage time and the packaging geometry.
Compared to simple worst case scenarios, the migration model enables much more refined results. Migration Modelling as an instrument is approved by both, the European Plastic Regulation and the JRC Guideline on Migration Modelling (Publication No. JRC98028), in order to meet compliance.
