Co-extruded PE-films with 3, 5 or more layers (COEX PE films) are intended for the sticking process to other types of films, resulting in complex packaging foils (Duplex-, Triplex-…). PE-film provides weldability and density, while paper, aluminium, polyester, polyamid, polypropylen and other materials enhance the foil: in coex-blown film it is possible to combine the positive properties of various materials in one film. For example, packaging for ham consists of 5 different layers:
outer: printable layer, mostly polypropylen or polyethylen
between outer and middle: adhesion agent out of ethylene vinyl alcohol or ethylene vinyl acetate
middle: barrier layer out of polyamide, to “confine” the aroma
between middle and inner: adhesion agent
inner: a food-safe film with good sealing properties, so that the film can be welded to the other side of the packaging, which is usually out of polytheylene
Laminated foils are used:
- in the food industry: pasta, salt, soups, salad, coffee, peanuts, pudding, fruit juice, vacuum packaging of meat and frozen goods
- in the pharmaceutical packaging industry: pills and pulverised drugs for humans and animals
- household items: packaging of washing powders
- cosmetic industry: packaging of shampoos, creams, wipes
