Grasspaper made by Pfleiderer Spezialpapiere is a sustainable, innovative Packaging material made of renewable resources.
Grasspaper is biodegradeable and can be easily recycled as waste-paper.
At the production of this product we add 30 % of grassfibers to woodbased pulp. These grassfibers come from hay-harvest from regional sources. This environmentalfriendly material can be converted to pulp with only 3 % of the energy-consumption and 1 % of the water-consumption in comparision to classical pulp-production-processes. The preparation of the fibers is done mechanically without adding chemicals. The transport-distances are short, as the material comes from local sources.
All in all this results in an outstanding low carbon-footprint, 75 % smaller than a traditional wood-pulp.
Grasspaper can be used for bag-making, production of corrugated board and packaging inlays. Depending on the goods that have to be wrapped we can applicate barriers against fat or water. As a bio-based packaging material for fatty or moist foodstuff or for fruits and vegetables, Grasspaper can be used as a substitute for plastic-packaging. So we are able to help to reduce plastic-waste with this material. An additional remarkable effect is a increase of the shelf-life of fruit and vegetables in contact with this breathable packaging, which is able to regulate humidity and caused by that mould- and fungi-growth. As a member of the SAVE FOOD initiative we are happy to be able to contribute in the efforts to reduce food-waste with our product.
The fast growing world-wide demand for wood-pulp leads to exceeding monoculture forest areas also in rain-forest regions. This is a critical development. To force an environmental- friendly packaging material like Grasspaper, and to establish gras or hay from regional sources as a third fiber-source in the paper-industry, is an interesting future concept in terms of ecological and economical aspects.
Grasspaper is produced in a substance range between 70 und 120 gsm at Pfleiderer. Barriers against fat and water are added tailormade on customer's request on one-side or both sides. The paper is available in reels and sheets.
