NaKu is short for “Natürlicher Kunststoff” (German for natural polymers) and was founded by Johann Zimmermann in 2007. We use natural and renewable resources for our materials and fabricate products that are similar to conventional polymers, not only in their appearance but also in their processing and their features. Modern technology allows the production of polymers made of plants from native agriculture like sugar, potatoes, maize or grain. If natural polymer is exposed to wind and weather and especially bacteria (several weeks or month), it starts to rot. This way NaKu products made of natural polymer can be disposed with the household waste or be composted. Thus they are returned to earth and can serve as a basis for growth of new resources. Thus we are able to unite nature and polymers. For us, the combination of nature and technology is not contradictory but in fact a future necessity.
Our product portfolio includes natural plastic granules, rotting bottles, bags, packaging material and injection-molded parts. In addition to the bottles, a special bag with particularly strong freshness for fruit, vegetables and bread is an important product. NaKu is awarded with The Innovation Award 2007, the WU Graduate of the Year 2010, Weisssee Idea Lounge 2010 or the ÖGUT Environmental Award 2015. NaKu was also nominated for the Austrian Climate Protection Award 2012.
