Trend-setting pneumatic systems for demanding applications
Air technology plays an essential role in today's industrial world. Without air technology no modern hospital or printing plant would be able to function. There would be virtually no food packaging and the semiconductor production would also grind to a halt.
Countless industrial processes only become possible under vacuum pressure. Vacuum and blast air ensures precise, fast handling ("pick and place" applications) in production lines – e.g. for transporting raw eggs and moving heavy objects, in the winery or in the production of contact lenses and computer chips, or for blank assembly in clean rooms.
Besides the printing and packaging industry, where Becker has a long tradition, Becker units are also used in logistics, medicine and environment technology. Vacuum and pneumatic units with movable laser systems weld steel plates into hulls quickly and with high precision, package flour exact to the gram and vacuum-controlled money counting machines guarantee that the cash amount is correct. In the construction industry, plaster is applied to the walls by means of compressed air. Water treatment units supply swimming pools, aquariums and drinking water systems with oxygen. The Gebr. Becker GmbH is a long-term leading specialist in these fields of practice.
Founded as Maschinenfabrik Gebr. Becker in Wuppertal-Barmen in 1885, the medium-size family enterprise, now in its fourth generation, already specialised in pneumatic systems and vacuums at the start of the previous century. Meanwhile the company has a network of subsidiary companies at home and abroad with 490 employees in Germany and 750 employees worldwide. The headquarters in Wuppertal has been continuously expanded, modernised and converted into a process-oriented island manufacturing facility. Another modern production facility was opened in Apolda/Thuringia in 1999. Approximately 120,000 devices and systems are produced in the plants every year, the export contingent is 75 percent.
The company repeatedly pioneered new developments in vacuum and pneumatic technology. To continue this trend in the future, the research and development department cooperates with renowned partners such as the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Aachen and Dortmund, as well as the universities and technical colleges in Freiburg, Merseburg, Bochum, Zittau/Görlitz, Wuppertal and Aachen. The main focus behind the cooperation lies on the technological development and fundamental research, application research, company organisation, quality management and human resource development.
Supporting new talent has a high priority – not only in own training workshops, but also by supporting external educational institutions. Becker offers internships to high school and university students in Wuppertal and in international subsidiaries abroad. The Becker support fund enables young employees to work abroad in partner companies; for example China in 2006.
Becker employees organise advanced training courses for teachers of cooperating schools with business and science classes. In 2003, the Confederation of German Employers awarded Becker, together with a vocational college and partner companies, with an award for employers, the "Deutsche Arbeitgeberpreis für Bildung", for furthering local vocational training through cooperation. Employees accept responsibility and are active in examination boards, as commercial judges, as labour judges or as lecturers at universities. Additionally they participate in various committees and work groups of the large professional associations.
