Strapping devices for either PP or PET strapping come in three basic types: manual, pneumatic power tool and battery-powered tools.
Using a manual strapping device, strapping bands are tensioned by means of a handle or lever and then closed/sealed with a metal seal or buckle. This procedure can either be done with two separate tools (cheapest version) – a tensioner and a sealer – or it can be combined in one tool. The most comfortable way is to use a magazine device or – tool where the next seal automatically "postslides" after every strapping cycle.
For users doing a lot of strapping cycles, the investment in a battery-powered strapping device pays off. Tensioning and welding of strapping bands is done the same way with every battery-powered tool: The tensioning is done by means of a tension roller, which has a toothed belt drive transporting the strapping. Then a so-called “friction-welding-method” or “rub-press-method” is used: The two ends of the strapping band are rubbed and pressed against each other at the same time which welds them together. Strap joining is performed by melting the plastic strap material through friction-inducted heat.
Outstanding cost-effectiveness among all battery-powered strapping devices features our new hand tool model LST 270. Ergonomically balanced for one-hand operations enables the tool strap tensioning and welding simply by pressing a button. An optimized user control allows the preselection of four operation modes “automatic”, “semiautomatic”, “manual” and “soft” (last mode for a gentle strapping of fragile packages). Status indication and all settings are ensured comfortable via keypad with integrated digital display unit. The LST 270 is suitable for processing of PP and PET strap ranged from 9 to 16 mm strap width and assure safe closures up to 2,750 N strap tension. A weight of only 3.7 kilograms and a very high maximum strap tension speed up to 16 m/min allows rapid and handy working. Thanks to a hanging driving wheel layout the LST hand tool can be open very easy and simple under tension. To ensure a long-life service, low maintenance costs and solid performance the LST 270 is fitted with a brushless strapping and welding motor and also a lithium-ion battery without memory effect.
Strapping devices with pneumatic control are used a lot less than battery-powered ones as they cannot be used as flexibly (they rely on compressed air supply). However, where constant tension power is needed or where there is a great volume to be packed and strapped, pneumatic control-devices are often a good choice since they do not require a battery which in turn would have to be charged regularly.
Among strapping devices for steel strapping one can differentiate between two types depending on the supporting surface available: Steel strapping devices for round packs and for flat packs. With round packs there is no or a very small supporting surface available. For this kind of strapping only steel-strapping-devices are suitable, therefore, there is no chance of using PET- or PP-strapping.
Regarding tensioning devices for polyester strapping, also called reel tensioners, various available types differ mainly in their width or their processing quality. The standard types are tensioning devices for 10-19 mm strapping width which can be used for Polyester strapping (glued, woven, composite) and PP-strap as well as for some PET strap. The next grade then is from 25-40mm or even up to 50mm. The standard tensioning device for lashing is the LS Lash HD, which is very solid but also light in weight, thanks to the aluminum it is made of.
