Plastimak has decades of experience in food packaging, proudly supporting industry leading names. In doing so, we have developed the necessary know-how, constantly expanding our knowledge to cater to any customer requirements.
At the same time, frequent investments in our facilities and mechanical equipment, such as our full HD Flexo, ensure top-tier results that make the product stand out while on the shelf.
Below you may find our suggestions for some product categories:
The performance of the modified atmosphere introduced in most such products is critical for the perceived freshness and texture of the enclosed products. The feasibility of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is therefore contingent upon the seal integrity of such products.
Meat and Dairy products
Due to the sensitivity of specific products, special materials are used to ensure sufficiently high barriers to moisture/gasses. At the same time, traditionally high clarity requirements mandate the use of antifog materials. All the above need to be combined with peelable materials that enhance the perceived value by the customer for top-web film applications.
The mechanical properties of the materials are of paramount importance due to the extreme cold conditions during storage. Therefore, some materials are not suitable for use as they are prone to breaking. Tensile strength and puncture resistance, for example, are key considerations in the choice of appropriate structure.
For frozen vegetables, low permeability against light is also crucial. Specifically, the oxidization of chlorophyll due to light exposure may result in textural or visual deterioration.
Pasta, Rice, Pulses
Typically seen as commoditized packaging structures, pasta packages can stand out through applications such as stand-up pouches. Even more so in the case of rice and pulses, where stand-up pouches of all sorts have become an industry rule.
The preservation of flavours, aromas and consistency in packages of grounded coffee and coffee beans is critical. However, traditional coffee packaging is under fire due to the use of Aluminum which, while offering high barrier properties, renders the packaging unrecyclable. Other high-barrier films can take the place of aluminum, but need to ensure low permeability to oxygen, moisture and light to ensure the preservation of the major coffee attribute, the aroma. Finally, peelable films are suggested as they can increase the customer perceived value immensely.
Traditionally, single servings of sugar in the form of stickpacks increased product usability when first introduced. Since then, coffee single servings have also made their appearance, while most recently liquid food packaging and cosmetics samples attain the maximum functionality or their marketing purposes, respectively, through stickpacks. However, depending on the various enclosed products, stickpacks need to provide the needed features, ranging from tensile strength for cosmetics samples to impermeability for olive oil single servings.
For snacks, the seal integrity is of utmost importance to avoid leaking. At the same time, different barriers need be applied to ensure that the aroma and texture of the enclosed product is maintained.
Delicatessen (Olives, peppers, etc.)
Infamous for its aggressive, low PH (acidic) content, delicatessen packaging is deemed highly specialized and requires considerable expertise. Barriers are crucial for the usually long product shelf life, while bond and seal strength are also of pivotal importance. The morphology of the packaging itself tends to reflect the premium nature of such products, with Doypack® style stand-up pouches with zipper and easy-open applications being the norm.
